On April 6, 2008, I participated in Austin, Texas, in the 1st Digital Journalism Ibero American Coloquium, organized by Rosental Calmon Alves, Knight Chair in Journalism at the University of Texas. During this event, 25 journalists and researchers from Latin America, Spain and Portugal invited to attend committed to Rosental’s idea of creating a network geared to sharing information and knowledge about new media and digital journalism.

The most immediate goal of this network is to foster communication and knowledge-sharing among anyone interested in learning how to connect with audiences online and in developing effective digital journalism products. W

hile most of the people at the meeting were either journalists or researchers, a number of participants stressed the need to involve students and younger people drawn to new media. The initial idea is to share this informa

tion in Spanish and Portuguese.

Rosental Alves Calmon.

I think this is a great idea: journalists, bloggers and media owners in Latin America have much to learn from what’s taking place in and outside the region.
