Los CrisisCamps: primero Haití, ahora Chile

El pasado sábado unos 40 voluntarios se reunieron en las instalaciones del Banco Mundial en Washington para colaborar con CrisisCamp Haití, un grupo que conecta por Internet a las organizaciones locales e internacionales que asisten en la recuperación de Haití tras el terremoto del 12 de enero.
La reunión del sábado pronto se convirtió en un CrisisCamp Haití-Chile en respuesta al sismo que había golpeado a este país esa madrugada. Estando en Washington, decidí asistir a la reunión para conocer de primera mano el trabajo de esa organización, que había descubierto el año pasado navegando por la red.
Al llegar me encontré con una pequeña armada de geeks, programadores, especialistas en mapas digitales, traductores y ciudadanos carentes de habilidades técnicas, pero deseosos en ayudar. Cada cual trabajaba en su computador portátil.
Entre quienes conocí estaban Heather Blanchard y Noel Dickover, dos de los cofundadores, junto con Andrew Turner, de CrisisCommons, una organización fundada en marzo del 2009 para conectar por la web a voluntarios, organizaciones de rescate, agencias de ayuda internacional, las ONG y el sector privado.
CrisisCommons es precisamente la organización madre de los CrisisCamps. A la fecha se han realizado unos 45 CrisisCamp Haití en ciudades como Washington, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Seattle, Toronto, Londres, Wellington (Nueva Zelanda) y Bogotá.
Y ahora comienzan los CrisisCamp Chile, como el que está programado para el próximo sábado en Washington, con el apoyo del Banco Mundial y otras instituciones. En esencia, el objetivo de estos Camps es facilitar la comunicación entre organizaciones locales e internacionales. El epicentro de la comunicación se da lugar en una Wikipedia especial desde donde se establecen grupos de trabajo por tema, proyecto o región geográfica.
Uno de los principales proyectos es la agregación de información vital a mapas digitales de los sitios de desastre. Esto lo hacen colaborando con OpenStreetMap, un sitio en Internet que permite editar y enriquecer mapas a través de la web.
El sábado, cuando asistí al CrisisCamp, me senté al lado de Felipe Hall, un voluntario colombo-americano que estaba ayudando a actualizar una base de datos de medios de comunicación en Chile. Muy sorprendido, se volteó y me dijo que había más de 800 personas alrededor del mundo trabajando de manera simultánea en la misma base de datos.
Esta anécdota habla del poder y alcance de CrisisCommons, una organización que está utilizando la inmediatez y globalización de la Internet y los celulares para unir, sin costo o estructura física alguna, a grupos o personas que se pueden ayudar entre sí. “Es un nuevo paradigma”, explica Blanchard, una de sus fundadores. “Estamos ante un movimiento realmente global”.
Hace un año escribía en estas páginas sobre crowdsourcing, una filosofía de trabajo que estimula la colaboración entre grupos de personas para la resolución de problemas que individuos o compañías no pueden resolver por su cuenta. CrisisCommons está justamente basado en el novedoso y eficaz concepto de crowdsourcing.
Vemos así cómo comienza a cambiar la manera de organizar ayuda internacional utilizando la web y sus herramientas interactivas.
